Amazon EKS managed node groups introduces new update strategies

News

Amazon EKS has introduced new update strategies for managed node groups, providing more control over how EC2 instances are updated in Kubernetes clusters.

  • Two update strategies are now available: Default and Minimal Capacity
  • Minimal Capacity strategy updates managed node groups by launching fewer new EC2 instances
  • Particularly useful for: • Node groups scaled to zero • High-demand EC2 instances • GPU-accelerated instances • Instances with capacity reservations
  • Default strategy remains the standard approach for existing and new node groups
  • Available in most AWS Regions at no additional cost

This feature helps reduce operational overhead and provides more flexibility in managing Kubernetes cluster node updates.
