Updated Carbon Methodology for the AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool

Cloud Financial Management Blog

AWS has updated the Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT) with three key improvements to help customers track their carbon emissions:

  • Enhanced data access through AWS Billing and Cost Management Data Exports service
  • More granular carbon emissions data by AWS Region
  • Updated, independently-verified carbon methodology (version 2.0)

Key methodology changes include:

  • Allocating emissions from unused server capacity to all customers
  • Improved emissions allocation for services without dedicated hardware
  • Including overhead emissions from data center operations

Customers will see updated carbon emissions estimates for AWS usage starting January 2025, supporting their sustainability journey and AWS's commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.
