Deploying external boot volumes with AWS Outposts

AWS has introduced support for external boot volumes with AWS Outposts, enabling users to boot EC2 instances directly from third-party storage arrays like NetApp and Pure Storage FlashArray.

  • Two boot methods are supported: SANboot and Outposts localboot
  • SANboot allows booting from remote storage using iPXE and iSCSI
  • Localboot copies the boot volume to local instance storage
  • Currently supports Windows 2022 and Red Hat Linux 9
  • Requires specific network connectivity and hardware prerequisites

This enhancement provides greater flexibility for storage management, allowing customers to use existing storage investments while maintaining AWS automation and seamless integration.
