Amazon ECS announces IPv6-only support

Containers Blog

Amazon ECS now supports IPv6-only workloads, enabling organizations to run containerized applications in IPv6 environments while addressing IPv4 address exhaustion challenges.

  • Tasks can run in IPv6-only subnets without dual-stack configurations
  • Integrates with AWS PrivateLink and VPC endpoints using IPv6
  • Maintains enterprise-grade security through IPv6-aware security groups
  • Enables communication with AWS services like ECR, CloudWatch, and Secrets Manager over IPv6
  • Supports awsvpc, bridge, and host networking modes

Migration strategies include in-place updates for non-load balanced services and gradual traffic shifting for services with load balancers. This capability helps organizations streamline network architecture and meet IPv6 compliance requirements.
