AWS Lambda announces new capabilities to optimize costs up to 90% for Provisioned mode for Kafka ESM

News

This article announces new cost optimization capabilities for AWS Lambda's Provisioned mode for Kafka event source mappings (ESMs), enabling up to 90% cost reduction.

  • ESM grouping allows multiple Kafka ESMs to share Event Poller Unit (EPU) capacity within same VPC
  • Default event pollers per EPU increased from 4 to 10 for low-throughput use cases
  • Improved EPU utilization reduces costs up to 90% for low-throughput workloads
  • Maintains Provisioned mode benefits: throughput controls, schema validation, filtering, low-latency invocations
  • Available in all AWS Commercial Regions where Lambda Provisioned mode for Kafka ESM operates
  • Configuration via Lambda ESM API, Console, CLI, SDK, CloudFormation, and SAM using PollerGroupName parameter

These enhancements make Provisioned mode cost-effective for all Kafka workloads, including lower-throughput applications, while preserving performance and control features.
