Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports snapshots on read replicas

News

Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports creating DB snapshots directly on read replica instances, improving backup and disaster recovery workflows.

  • Create manual snapshots on read replicas without promoting them first
  • Faster initial snapshots after promotion, reducing Multi-AZ enablement time
  • Automated backups supported by setting backup retention period greater than zero
  • Works for both in-region and cross-region read replicas
  • Available for SQL Server Enterprise Edition across all AWS Regions and GovCloud
  • Point-in-time recovery (PITR) from read replicas not supported

This feature provides more flexibility and predictable disaster recovery timelines for SQL Server deployments on larger storage configurations.
